Who’s Your Mephibosheth | 2 Samuel 9:1-13
Who is your One? Who is the one person in your life that needs a relationship with Jesus? Who is someone you can show the kindness of God to? In 2023, Ohio State did a study that found that anxiety, depression, and stress could be alleviated by little acts of kindness; as small as offering a word of positive reinforcement. These acts ended up leading to a sense of happiness and satisfaction. The leading researcher Dr. Martela said, “When you help someone, when you have a positive impact on others, your own happiness and sense of meaningfulness increases.” In other words, we should try a little kindness; kindness is a way to point people to Jesus.
When you read the Bible, isn’t it interesting that you are reading a book that is over 2000 years old and yet it is just as relevant as if it were written yesterday? When you think of the Bible, you can see it one of three ways: a map (giving you direction for life), a mirror (showing you who you are) and a window (giving you a view of God and something bigger than yourself beyond yourself.) One of the sweetest stories of love and kindness you will ever read in the Old Testament is the story of David and Mephibosheth. It is a mini story of the relationship between two people that functions as both a mirror and a window for us today to see the bigger story of the Bible and our personal calling. We learn how we live out the grace of God and the gospel in our own lives. The more you believe in the gospel, the more you become like the gospel in your everyday life.
