Little Is Much | Mark 12:35-44
Do you like getting a bargain? Have you ever bought something online that you thought would have been awesome, only to realize it wasn’t as great of a deal as you thought? I used to pride myself in getting impressive deals online for hotels, until getting a hotel for $23 in S.E Atlanta. It was a Days Inn. It had great pictures; a pool, a fitness center, free breakfast, close to the interstate. We get there at 10pm and the outside was nice. I told my wife, “Honey, aren’t you glad you married me? I get us this nice hotel to stop over on our way and it was only $23.” We get our three little kids out of the van, they are exhausted. We walk into the room and we got what I paid for; it was nasty, hair on the phone, floor was dirty, TV was dusty, dead roaches, bathroom smelled funny and the reception desk was shady and smelled like pot. What I thought was an impressive deal, was an ordeal and a nightmare. Here’s a tip: If you ever get a hotel deal for under $25 a night it’s probably not as nice as you think it is. Sometimes in life what we think is one thing ends up being something else all entirely. We tend to overestimate some things and under estimate others.
We are in the Temple area with Jesus and it is still Tuesday of Passion week. Jesus has been on the hot seat of interrogation by the Pharisees, Sadducees, and a scribe. Every question thrown at Jesus was met with mind-blowing wisdom so that “no one dared asked him any more questions.” In the next section, Jesus is going to take us below the surface to see himself, the scribes, and a poor widow they way He sees them. Jesus shows us His deity, the scribes insecurity, and the poor widows generosity.
