The Day That Pigs Flew | Mark 5:1-20
Dr. Alan Brumback   -

Have you ever heard the phrase: when pigs fly? It came to be a figure of speech from a Scottish proverb which said, “if pigs had wings everything would be possible.” It is used to express that one thinks something will never happen, is highly unlikely to happen or that something is impossible. You may not know this, but according to the internet, September 9th is “National When Pigs Fly Day.” It is a day the reminds us that sometimes even seemingly impossible things can happen. We don’t need a day, we have a King who can do the impossible.

In our text, we see pigs fly and Jesus do the impossible. We are in a section of miracles where Jesus reveals and authenticates who He is and what His Kingdom is like. In Chapter 5, Mark spends time giving details and descriptions of the problems that people faced and the miraculous power that Jesus demonstrated in overcoming them. This miracle story has three movements built around three different characters: the demons, the crowd, and the man. Each character responds to Jesus’ power differently and we learn something about Jesus from all three responses. In this story, we see Jesus demonstrating His power and ability to do the impossible. It is a call for us to trust in Him and His purposes for our lives.
