An Unforgettable Woman + the Priceless Savior | Mark 14:1-11
Dr. Alan Brumback   -

It’s Mother’s Day. We love and celebrate all women, and today especially mothers. Everyone who is alive is here because somebody carried you in their body for 9 months. Who are good role models for young girls today? Most American girls do not know the remarkable women in the gospel of Mark. Women played important roles in the Gospels. There are over 15 women referenced in Mark’s gospel and each serve as examples of faith, generosity, and devotion. Of all the people that Jesus encountered, He said that “where ever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she did will be told in memory of her.” She is not just an example for women but for every man, woman, boy and girl. She is someone who adores Jesus with all of her heart and her life. Parents, this must be the deepest longing for your kids, that they would be passionate worshipers of Jesus. In a world searching for role models, Jesus tells us that here is one for all of us.

In Chapter 14, the mood changes. Everything has been moving towards the Cross on Good Friday. Chapter 14 is the longest chapter in the book, and it focuses on the “passion” of Jesus. Everything written to this point has pointed us to this moment in Jesus’ life. Chapter 14 begins with the set up that will lead to Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus is going to be rejected, betrayed, and abandoned. But before he is abandoned, he will be adorned. Mark begins Chapter 14 with an intentional contrast of a man who sold Jesus out for money and a woman who gave up her most valuable possession to show us the meaning of whole-hearted devotion to Jesus. She serves as an example for all of us today.
